REGISTER AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT TO THE DANZIGER 7
Two people lost their lives on the Danziger Bridge on
September 4, 2005. Regardless of the circumstances, loss of life is always
a tragedy and we pray that their families find peace. Now, sixteen months after
the incident, District Attorney Eddie Jordan has expanded the scope of that
tragedy, despoiling the lives of seven New Orleans police officers and their
families.
(AP Photo/Alex Brandon) In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, several New Orleans
police officers responded to a call of rescue workers being fired upon in the
area of the Danziger Bridge. Upon their arrival, the police officers themselves
were fired upon and became engaged in a gun battle that lasted for several
minutes. The incident ended with two people dead and three others injured.
In a case investigated originally by the 7th District Investigative Unit and
eventually by the NOPD Homicide Division, all seven officers were cleared of
wrongdoing and found to have acted within the law, abiding by the rules,
regulations and procedures of the New Orleans Police Department.
In an unprecedented move, District Attorney Eddie Jordan,
suffering from a negative public image and poor press coverage since
the hurricane, decided to disregard those investigations and bring the case to
the Grand Jury. Under the orchestration of ADA Davis, the Grand Jury heard only
one side of the story, with Davis going so far as to refuse to allow one of the
investigators to testify in fear that he would clear up supposed inconsistencies
in his police report.
(AP Photo/Alex Brandon) The Grand Jury returned indictments of 1st Degree Murder
against NOPD Sergeant Kenneth Bowen, Sergeant Robert Gisevius, Officer Anthony Villavaso
and former NOPD Officer Robert Faulcon. In addition, indictments for attempted
murder were returned against Officer Robert Barrios, Officer Michael Hunter and
Officer Ignatius Hills.
